3 Day Devotional: Talk is Cheap - Day 1

Day 1: What You Say Matters

Scripture
What good is it, dear brothers and sisters, if you say you have faith but don’t show it by your actions? Can that kind of faith save anyone?
James 2:14 (NLT)

Devotional Reflection
James begins this passage with a profession: “if you say you have faith.” Before he examines anyone's actions, he examines their claim. That reminds us that what we say matters. Our words are not empty. They reveal what we believe, what we value, and what is happening in our hearts. James has already taught believers to be careful with their speech because our words often expose our spiritual condition.

The Christian faith has always been a confessing faith. We are called to declare that Jesus Christ is Lord, testify to God's grace, and proclaim the good news of the gospel. A profession of faith matters because faith is not something we are meant to hide.

But James immediately introduces a question that demands our attention. What if saying it is all we've done? What if our profession is real on our lips but never becomes visible in our lives? James is not criticizing the confession of faith; he is preparing us to evaluate it.

Before moving on, take time to consider your own profession. Do your words about Jesus reflect a genuine trust in Him? Are they the honest expression of a heart devoted to Christ, or have they become familiar phrases that no longer shape the way you live?

Faith should be confessed. James wants us to say so. But he also wants us to ask whether our confession is genuine.

Reflection Questions
1. What does your regular speech reveal about what you truly believe and value?
2. Does your profession of faith flow from a living relationship with Christ?
3. How can you intentionally speak about God's grace this week?

Prayer
Father, thank You for the privilege of confessing Jesus Christ as Lord. Forgive me when my words become routine or disconnected from my heart. Help me speak honestly about what You have done in my life. Let my profession of faith be sincere and rooted in genuine trust. May my words honor Christ and point others to Him. Amen.
