3 Day Devotional: Stick & Stones - Day 1

Scripture
“Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness. For we all stumble in many ways. And if anyone does not stumble in what he says, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle his whole body.”
James 3:1–2 (ESV)

Devotional Reflection
James begins his discussion of the tongue by addressing those whose words influence others. At first, this may seem like an unusual place to start, but James understands something we often forget: words shape people. Teachers in the early church explained the faith and guided believers in following Christ. Because their words carried influence, they also carried responsibility.

The principle extends far beyond formal teaching. Parents teach. Mentors teach. Ministry leaders teach. Friends often teach through their counsel and example. Whenever someone listens to our words for guidance, we have influence in their life.

That influence is a gift from God and a stewardship before God. James warns that influence brings accountability because our words affect more than ourselves. God cares deeply about those entrusted to our care, and He does not call us to handle that responsibility carelessly.

At the same time, James reminds us that “we all stumble in many ways.” None of us uses our influence perfectly. That truth should not drive us to avoidance or fear, but to humility. The goal is not perfection through our own strength; it is faithful stewardship. Spiritual maturity is often revealed by how we speak, because our words expose what is happening within us.

Before asking how many people are listening to us, we should ask whether we are stewarding their trust well.

Prayer
Father, thank You for every opportunity You give me to influence others. Forgive me for the times I have spoken carelessly or failed to value the trust others have placed in me. Give me humility, wisdom, and grace in my speech. Help my words reflect a heart that is growing in Christ and faithfully stewarding every relationship You have entrusted to me. Amen.
