3 Day Devotional: I've Got This - Day 1

Scripture
“Come now, you who say, ‘Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit’— yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes.”
James 4:13-14 (ESV)

Devotional Reflection
James begins by examining not merely what people are saying, but what their words reveal about their hearts. The people in this passage had every detail mapped out. They had settled the timing, chosen the destination, determined the duration, decided the activity, and assumed the outcome.

There was only one problem: God was missing from the conversation.

James is not condemning planning. The problem is presumption. These people had constructed a future in which God's will was never considered. Their confidence rested entirely in themselves.

Many of us can easily fall into the same trap. Sometimes success slowly shifts our confidence from God to our own abilities. At other times, disappointment convinces us that depending on God is too risky, so we decide to handle things ourselves. Different roads can lead to the same destination: "I've got this."

James dismantles that illusion with one sobering reminder: "You do not know what tomorrow will bring." Tomorrow has never belonged to us. It has always belonged to God. Our lives are like a mist, visible for a moment and then gone.

This truth is not meant to make us fearful. It is meant to make us humble. Humility begins when we recognize how dependent we truly are on the God who holds every tomorrow in His hands.

Prayer
Father, forgive me for the times I have assumed I was in control of my future. Remind me that tomorrow belongs to You alone. Teach me to depend on You, seek Your wisdom, and trust Your guidance. Help me hold every plan loosely and submit every decision to Your loving care. Amen.
