3 Day Devotional: In Jesus' Name, Amen - Day 3

Day 3: Pray in Jesus' Name

Scripture
“The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.”
James 5:16b (NIV)

Devotional Reflection
James declares that the prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective. That statement immediately raises an important question: Who is righteous? Scripture tells us that none of us is righteous on our own. Even our best efforts cannot make us right before a holy God.

The good news of the gospel is that Jesus did for us what we could never do for ourselves. He lived the righteous life we could not live. He died the death our sin deserved. Through faith in Him, God brings us into right standing with Himself. Our confidence in prayer is not our goodness, our knowledge, or our religious performance. Our confidence is Jesus.

This is what it means to pray in Jesus' name. It is not a magic phrase or a spiritual password. To pray in Jesus' name is to come to the Father because of Jesus, under the authority of Jesus, submitted to the will of Jesus, and seeking the glory of Jesus.

When we pray, we do not come based on the strength of our name. We come because Jesus has given us access. We do not come demanding our will. We come trusting His will.

And when we say “Amen,” we place everything we have prayed into God's hands. Amen means more than “I'm done praying now.” It means, “So be it.” It means trusting God with the outcome. Prayer is not powerful because we have the right words. Prayer is powerful because we pray to a powerful God.

Reflection Questions
1. Where do you most need to trust God's will rather than insist on your own?
2. Are you relying on your own goodness or on Christ's righteousness as you approach God?
3. How can you intentionally pray today with greater confidence in Jesus and greater surrender to His will?

Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You for giving me access to the Father through Your righteousness and not my own. Help me remember that my confidence is in You alone. Teach me to seek Your glory, submit to Your will, and trust You with every outcome. As I bring my requests before You, help me rest in the certainty that I can trust the God I ask. Amen.
