3 Day Devotional: I've Got This Day 2
Day 2: The Imperative of Submission
Scripture
“Instead you ought to say, ‘If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that.’”
James 4:15 (ESV)
Devotional Reflection
After exposing the illusion of self-sufficiency, James presents the proper response: submission to the will of God. The phrase "If the Lord wills" is not a Christian slogan to be added to our vocabulary. It is a posture of the heart. James is calling us to a life that is genuinely surrendered to God's authority and leadership.
Notice the order of James' words. Before any business, before any travel, before any profit, the Lord must first will that we live. Every breath depends on Him. Yet the good news is that He does.
This should draw our attention directly to Christ. Jesus came that we might have life, and He reminds us that apart from Him we can do nothing. Like a branch disconnected from the vine, we may appear successful for a season while living independently of God. Yet true spiritual life is found only through abiding in Christ.
Submission is not passive resignation. It is active trust. It says, "Lord, I will make plans, but they are Your plans. I will work hard, but I trust Your timing. I will pursue excellence, but I surrender the outcome."
Faith is not confidence in our plans. Faith is confidence in God's purpose.
Reflection Questions
1. What situation in your life feels uncertain or beyond your control right now?
2. Are you truly surrendered to God's will, or are you asking Him to bless a plan you've already decided upon?
3. What plan, dream, or expectation do you need to place in God's hands today?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You for being the source of my life. Keep my heart surrendered to Your will and my eyes fixed on You. Help me trust Your timing, Your wisdom, and Your purpose above my own understanding. Teach me to walk in faith, knowing that Your plans are always better than mine. Amen.
