3 Day Devotional: Gimme That - Day 3
Day 3: A Heart That Comes Near to God
Scripture
7 Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8 Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. 9 Grieve, mourn and wail. Change your laughter to mourning and your joy to gloom. 10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up. James 4:7-10 (NIV)
Devotional Reflection
The good news is that God does not merely expose our problem. He shows us the way back. No matter how far the heart has wandered, God still extends an invitation: “Come near.”
James begins with submission. The road back to God does not start with self-improvement, excuses, or trying harder. It begins with surrender. It is the humble confession: “God, I'm done insisting on my way. Your will is better than mine.”
Then comes the beautiful promise that anchors this passage: “Come near to God and he will come near to you.” God is not running from repentant sinners. He welcomes them. Genuine repentance takes sin seriously, grieves over offending a holy God, and seeks a renewed heart.
Ultimately, this invitation is possible because of Jesus Christ. The gospel is not that we climbed our way back to God. The gospel is that God came near to us. Jesus never coveted. He never compromised. He perfectly submitted to His Father's will and then went to the cross to pay the penalty for our sins so that we could come near to God.
As Christ changes us, our desires begin to change as well. The heart that once cried, “Gimme that,” begins to pray, “Lord, gimme more of You.” The greatest answer to “Gimme that!” is not getting what the world offers. It's getting more of Jesus.

1. What is keeping you from drawing near to God with complete honesty today?
2. Do you truly believe that God welcomes repentant sinners through Jesus Christ?
3. What practical step can you take today to come nearer to God in faith and surrender?
Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You for coming near to me when I could not come near to You. Thank You for Your perfect obedience, Your sacrifice on the cross, and Your grace that welcomes me home. Change my heart and reshape my desires. May I seek more than anything else the joy, peace, and life found in You. Lord, gimme more of You. Amen.
