3 Day Devotional: Sticks & Stones - Day 2

Scripture
“If we put bits into the mouths of horses so that they obey us, we guide their whole bodies as well. Look at the ships also: though they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are guided by a very small rudder wherever the will of the pilot directs. So also the tongue is a small member, yet it boasts of great things. How great a forest is set ablaze by such a small fire!”
James 3:3–5 (ESV)

Devotional Reflection
James uses three vivid illustrations to help us understand the power of our words: a bit in a horse's mouth, a rudder on a ship, and a fire in a forest. Though each is small, each exerts influence far beyond its size. In the same way, the tongue is a small part of the body, yet it can have an enormous effect on the lives of others.

Words can direct people toward hope, wisdom, and faithfulness. A timely encouragement can strengthen someone who is weary. Wise counsel can help a person navigate uncertainty. Loving correction can redirect someone away from a destructive path. What seems insignificant to the speaker may become life-changing to the listener.

But James also warns that the tongue can be destructive. Unlike a controlled fire that provides warmth and light, an uncontrolled fire quickly spreads and consumes everything in its path. Harsh words, gossip, rumors, and angry outbursts often operate the same way. Once released, they can travel farther than we intended and cause damage long after they are spoken.

Many of us can still recall words that wounded us years ago. Likewise, we may not fully realize the lasting effects of words we have spoken. James calls us to recognize that our speech carries real power. Our words are never merely sounds leaving our mouths; they can either build up or tear down, heal or harm, guide or destroy.

1. Are you still affected by words someone spoke to you in the past?
2. Have you minimized the potential impact of your own speech?
3. What conversation today requires greater care, wisdom, or restraint from you?

Prayer
Lord, help me remember that my words are never just words. Guard my speech from becoming a destructive fire. Use my words to encourage, guide, and strengthen rather than wound or divide. Give me wisdom before I speak and conviction when I am tempted to speak carelessly. May what comes from my mouth bring life instead of harm. Amen.
