3 Day Devotional: Sticks & Stones - Day 3

Scripture
“For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature, can be tamed and has been tamed by mankind, but no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in the likeness of God. From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so.”
James 3:7–10 (ESV)

Devotional Reflection
James moves from the impact of our words to the deeper issue beneath them: integrity. The problem is not only that our words can be destructive. The problem is that they can be contradictory.

With the same tongue we bless God and wound people who bear His image. We praise the Creator while demeaning those He created. James refuses to separate our worship of God from our treatment of people. If people are made in the likeness of God, then our words toward them matter deeply to Him.

The sobering reality is that James says no human being can tame the tongue. We know this from experience. We have vowed to do better, apologized repeatedly, and promised ourselves we would not say it again. Yet the struggle continues because the problem is deeper than vocabulary. The problem reaches all the way to the heart.

This is where the gospel brings hope. Jesus Christ alone lived with perfect integrity. No deceit was found in His mouth. At the cross, He bore the judgment for every sinful word we have ever spoken. Every lie, every rumor, every angry outburst, every careless comment was carried by Him.

We do not merely need cleaner mouths. We need new hearts. Jesus came to make us new. He can forgive the damage our words have done, heal wounds caused by words, and transform the heart from which our words flow. Ask Him to make the mouth that blesses God become a mouth that also blesses people made in the image of God.

Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You for bearing the judgment for my sinful words and for offering me forgiveness through the cross. I confess that my speech often reveals a heart in need of Your transforming grace. Give me a new heart and make my words consistent with my worship. Let my speech reflect Your character and bring blessing to those made in Your image. Amen.
