3 Day Devotional: Gimme That - Day 1

Scripture
1What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you? 2 You desire but do not have, so you kill. You covet but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight. You do not have because you do not ask God. 3 When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures. James 4:1-3 (NIV)

Devotional Reflection
James asks a penetrating question: “What causes fights and quarrels among you?” Our natural tendency is to blame circumstances, other people, misunderstandings, or unfair treatment. James takes us deeper. The conflict around us often reveals a conflict within us.

At the center of that inner battle is a coveting heart. Coveting is wanting what belongs to someone else. It is looking at what God has given another person and saying, “Gimme that.” Before those words are ever spoken aloud, they are whispered in the heart. We begin comparing, resenting, and questioning why someone else has what we want.

James shows how this inward desire eventually spills into our relationships. When our desires become demands, people become obstacles. Instead of loving others, we begin competing with them. Instead of rejoicing with them, we resent them. Conflict often grows where covetousness has already taken root.

James also reminds us that even our prayers can be affected by covetous desires. Rather than seeking God’s will, we can become focused on getting God to support our plans. The issue is not asking God. The issue is whether our hearts are surrendered to Him.

The fights around us may reveal something deeper within us. God graciously invites us to examine our hearts and bring every selfish desire before Him.

2. Is there something someone else has that your heart has been quietly saying, “Gimme that” about?
3. How can you surrender one specific desire to God's will today?

Prayer
Father, search my heart and reveal any covetous desires that have taken root within me. Forgive me for wanting my will more than Yours. Help me to trust Your wisdom, rejoice in Your provision, and seek Your kingdom above my personal ambitions. Teach me contentment and gratitude in every circumstance. Amen.
