3 Day Devotional: Talk is Cheap - Day 3
Day 3: Your Actions Reveal Whether You Believe What You Say
Scripture
18 Now someone may argue, “Some people have faith; others have good deeds.” But I say, “How can you show me your faith if you don’t have good deeds? I will show you my faith by my good deeds.” 19 You say you have faith, for you believe that there is one God. Good for you! Even the demons believe this, and they tremble in terror. 20 How foolish! Can’t you see that faith without good deeds is useless?
James 2:18-20 (NLT)
Devotional Reflection
James answers the question he has been building toward throughout this passage: How can faith be seen? His answer is simple: “Show me.” Faith itself is invisible, but genuine faith does not remain hidden. It reveals itself in a transformed life. Our actions do not create faith; they reveal it.
That is why James says that merely agreeing with the truth is not enough. Even demons believe certain truths about God. They know who Jesus is, yet they do not trust Him, love Him, or submit to Him. There is a difference between acknowledging truth and entrusting yourself to the Truth.
Think of someone who repeatedly says they trust a bridge but refuses to drive across it. Eventually, their actions reveal what they truly believe. Driving across the bridge does not make it strong; it demonstrates confidence in its strength. In the same way, obedience does not create faith—it reveals trust.
James is not calling us to work harder so God will love us. The gospel is that God loved us while we were still sinners and that salvation comes through Jesus Christ. Yet the same grace that saves also changes us. Christ not only forgives; He transforms.
Talk is cheap. But a life transformed by Jesus is priceless.
Reflection Questions
1. What evidence of God's transforming grace can you see in your life?
2. Are there truths you acknowledge but struggle to trust and obey?
3. What step of obedience would demonstrate your trust in Christ today?
Prayer
Gracious Savior, thank You for loving me, saving me, and changing me by Your grace. Help me move beyond merely knowing the truth to trusting and obeying You. Let my life reveal the reality of my faith and the power of Your transforming work. May others see evidence of Christ in me and be drawn to Your goodness and grace. Amen.
