3 Day Devotional: Healing Lives - Day 3

Scripture
“When Jesus saw her, he called her forward and said to her, ‘Woman, you are set free from your infirmity.’ Then he put his hands on her, and immediately she straightened up and praised God.

Indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, the synagogue leader said to the people, ‘There are six days for work. So come and be healed on those days, not on the Sabbath.’

The Lord answered him, ‘You hypocrites! Doesn’t each of you on the Sabbath untie your ox or donkey from the stall and lead it out to give it water? Then should not this woman, a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has kept bound for eighteen long years, be set free on the Sabbath day from what bound her?’

When he said this, all his opponents were humiliated, but the people were delighted with all the wonderful things he was doing.”

Devotional Reflection
When Jesus addressed the woman, He did more than heal her. He declared, “You are set free from your infirmity.” Luke tells us that immediately she straightened up and praised God.

While the woman rejoiced, the synagogue leader objected. He was more concerned about his understanding of Sabbath regulations than about the freedom of a suffering person. Jesus exposed the problem. While others saw a rule being challenged, Jesus saw a daughter of Abraham who had been bound for eighteen years and who ought to be free.

At the heart of this story is the contrast between bondage and freedom. Satan had kept her bound. Jesus came to set her free.

The same truth remains today. Jesus sees what has bound us. He sees sin, guilt, shame, fear, and every burden that holds us captive. More importantly, He has power to release what we cannot break on our own. Eighteen years was not too long for Jesus, and no burden you carry is beyond His reach.

As followers of Christ, we cannot do what Jesus alone can do. He is the healer and liberator. But we can participate in His work by helping carry burdens, removing barriers, extending mercy, and pointing people to Him. We should never help keep people bound when Jesus is setting them free.

Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You for seeing me and knowing everything I carry. Thank You that You desire freedom for Your people. Free me from every burden that keeps me from fully following You, and help me never stand in the way of Your work in the lives of others. Make me a servant who rejoices whenever You bring healing, hope, and freedom. Amen.
