3 Day Devotional: Healing Lives - Day 2

Scripture
“On a Sabbath Jesus was teaching in one of the synagogues, and a woman was there who had been crippled by a spirit for eighteen years. She was bent over and could not straighten up at all. When Jesus saw her, he called her forward and said to her, ‘Woman, you are set free from your infirmity.’ Then he put his hands on her, and immediately she straightened up and praised God.”
Luke 13:10-13 (NIV)

Devotional Reflection
Jesus was teaching when He noticed the woman. The crowd had gathered to hear Him, yet His attention was not so consumed by what He was doing that He failed to see who was before Him.

Others could see her bent frame. They had likely seen it for years. But Jesus saw more than her condition. He called her forward, spoke to her, touched her, and later would identify her as “a daughter of Abraham.” Her infirmity was real, but it was not her identity.

That distinction is vital. The world often defines people by what is most visible. A struggle becomes a label. A failure becomes a reputation. A wound becomes an identity. But Jesus sees beyond what is easiest to see. He sees the person behind the condition.

The challenge for us is learning to see people the way Jesus sees them. It is possible to notice people without truly considering them. It is possible to see someone's situation without seeing their value. Jesus invites us to look deeper.

Healing lives begins when we refuse to reduce people to appearances, histories, or weaknesses. It begins when we see them as people created by God and worthy of dignity, compassion, and care. Like Jesus, we must learn to see beyond what is wrong and recognize who is standing in front of us.

Do you tend to define people by their struggles rather than by their value before God?
What practical step can you take today to acknowledge and care for someone who feels unseen?

Prayer
Lord Jesus, teach me to see people the way You see them. Forgive me for focusing on appearances, failures, or assumptions instead of recognizing the value You place on every person. Open my eyes to those around me who need compassion and care, and help me reflect Your heart in the way I see and treat others. Amen.
